"There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can't even passively take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all!" - Mario Savio

A brief update on the Baylor Baseball players. The Lariat published an article today saying that it would be a federal offense for the baylor administration to make public the punishment these guys so deservedly receive. According to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, it would violate the section that prohibits colleges from releasing students records without authorization. This is probably a good law, but i'm curious as hell to know what they got, just to see how the adminisration would deal with "star athletes". I've dealt with this side of the administration before, and they were pretty straightforward with me and seemed pretty impartial. However, I'm not a baseball player for the nationally ranked team. If anyone comes across anything that suggests what the punishments may be, please let me know. Also according to the Lariat, the punishments can be as follows: Oral or Written warning, probation (disciplinary, i assume, which means if they get caught doing anything else in a certain period of time, mine was three months, they can get above normal penalties), eviction from campus facilities, suspension, or be permanently expelled. I'll keep you all updated.

A word of note. Turn TV off week is coming up, April 22-28. This is a very good thing. keep an eye out here or my webpage for more info, or visit www.adbusters.org for more info. I'm going to try to get the Baylor Lariat to do a feature article, or at least let me do an editorial on it. Campaign well!

Okay, under pressure (both from myself and others), here's my post on the baylor baseball bastards. For those who don't know, two baylor baseball players found a cat at 4 in the morning, shot it, beheaded it, and skinned it. They were arrested after a cop found the head in the back of their SUV. Obviously, this is a heinous act, along the lines of cockfighting (see below), of senseless animal cruelty by ignorant people. Many here at campus are upset with the lack of disciplinary action taken by the school (as of Friday's Lariat, they had been suspended indefinitely, pending an "internal investigation", but are still practicing with the team, although not travelling). I've got many feelings about this whole incident. Noone is going to try to defend these two players actions, and to my knowledge, they have not denied their roles in it. So arguing that point is moot. This is an incident that could happen anywhere. I really don't believe Baylor being a religious school has anything to do with the events in question, at all. The quote from the baseball spokesman stating "this is unacceptable behavior for baylor baseball players" is ridiculous. It's unacceptable behavior, period. My history of economic thought professor, Dr. Gardener, said he thought they should be forced to eat the cat since they killed it and skinned it. It seems absurd, but i like it. In conlusion, yeah, i'm embarassed that it happened at my school, but more so, i'm embarassed that this kind of shit happens all to often, in all parts of life. As a side note, this whole incident reminds my of something that happened when I was about 10 years old. We had just gotten back from a boy scout (another christian organization) campout and were waiting in a church parking lot waiting for parents to arrive to pick us up. A group of about 4 scouts found a frog in the parking lot, and began torturing it. They tossed it in the air as high as they could, letting it splat on the ground. They tried to play hackey sack with it. When they figured it was dead, they tried to toss it onto the church roof. They weren't behing the church or anything, they were in plain view of the 'scoutmasters". However, none of them said anything to the scouts. They just sat around drinking coffee and smoking. This kind of thing can best be prevented at home and in the early years of life. If we teach our children to respect animals, then we have a better chance for peaceful coexistence. Just a thought. By the way, I cried myself to sleep that night.

Alright. day two of the weblog. can't say much, i've got a policy test to study for, and i really should. anyways, in the newspaper yesterday (i read it on tulsaworld.com) there was an article about the house of reps. starting a bill making the transport of cockfighting birds across state lines illegal. There's only three states in the union that still have legal cockfighting, those being New Mexico, Louisiana, and (oh yeah, baby!) Oklahoma. None of the Oklahoma reps would comment on the bill, except to say that it's a state's rights issue and "I have so many other things that are more important than the transportation of cockfighting birds" (Steve Largent). His office says that he would vote for the bill if it reached the floor, however, he is dismissing the bill when asked about it. There is already a federal statute in place banning the transportation of fighting dogs. However, there are actually people that say that this bill would "wreak economic havoc even in those states that already ban cockfights. Breeders, they say, would be barred from transporting their birds out of state." Are these people trying to say that numerous corporations can lay off tens of thousands of people a month, but banning the transportation of cockfighting birds is going to wreck our economy? How many fighting cock breeders are there? Despite the obvious disgust and inhumanity of cockfighting, the fact that they also are worried about other activities, such as rodeos, being targeted. Sorry if I find this laughable, but, honestly, where is the justification for cockfighting? Am i alone in my complete embarrassment that in 2001, our country, (and even more personally, my state) is allowing this to play the role in congress that it is?
