"There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can't even passively take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all!" - Mario Savio

doo dee doo doo. (that was supposed to be twilight zone-ish, but i doubt it worked). Here is an interesting, yet creepy, chart that outlines some of the largest corporations in the world and what all they own. Jeez, man, these things are huge!

It's been all fun and games here lately, so it's time for a serious post. The World Economic Forum, a group of the richest and most powerful CEO's (microsoft, nike, gm, etc.) and political leaders (bush, blair, etc.) are meeting in NYC from jan 31 to feb 4. A mass protest, along the lines of the WTO protest in seattle, the G8 summit in Genoa, and various other smaller anti-globalization protests over the past few years, is being prepared. IndyMedia NYC has a great guide to who the WEF is, why they are being protested, who is doing the protesting, and many other questions that you may have. Also there is information here, from Indymedia.org. I'll do my best to keep you all updated on the goings-on next week, and if you have any heads-ups on stories, feel free to comment here or e-mail me (ssecrest48@hotmail.com). I like to use these demonstrations to bring up discussions with people who may not understand the point of view of these protestors. And, they make interesting news, when they get covered. Let's see how it goes.

good lord. I was planning on taking a break from posting quizzes, just b/c i've done a lot lately. Until I found this test, and got this result. I haven't had any jager in a long time, but i used to drink it fairly often. And it is NOT offensive. So....what drink would you be?
center>Drink me!

Which drink are you?

Indiana Jones 4 may be coming, with Harrison Ford, and Speilberg. I'm just glad they're not trying to do it with a different actor.

This is a great portrait of Queen Elizabeth that was done by Britain's most highly praised portrait artist. It's raised all kinds of hub-bub b/c it's not flattering at all. And, yes, the artist is the Grandson of noted psychologist Sigmund Freud. (here's your humor denise!) And, btw, the NPR discussion on this is great, and only about 4 minutes long, give it a shot!

Okay, since there's like 45 minutes left in the day, I'm way late in posting this, but happy Martin Luther King day (observed). I've, ironically enough, but not intentionally, been listening to Public Enemy all day, so it was appropriate. Here's a sweet timeline of his life, illustrated by elementary school kids that were learning about him. I think it's rad, so check it out. He was a good man, and worthy of a holiday. However, also on this day, we should also remember all civil rights activists, like Marcus Garvey, Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Bob Marley, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, and many others that don't get this recognition. Also think about Gandhi, who was one of Dr. King's main influences, most notably in the field of non-violent resistance. Peace!

I actually had a visitor from a Hungarian ISP yesterday. Very odd indeed. As far as cool google searches that I've popped up on, and people came here via, there was "Legolas Rocked", "Britany Spears Exposed" (go figure that one out from my christmas wish list post), "Who Should Have Played Giladriel", and a daypop search for "Michael Jordan". I think all of these people were probably disappointed in what they found here, but screw 'em. Who needs 'em anyways?

Don't forget, everyone. Ryan turns 23 tomorrow. Mwahahaha, everyone's older than me. Well, almost everyone.

Plus, we got some delicious snow today (and yes, i did taste it, and no, it didn't burn my tongue). Snow rocks. Not enough to do anything with though, unfortunately.

I'm just kicking back, checking out stuff on the OLGA website and thinking about how cool the internet is. I think about my friend Chris Beck, who moved to Detroit after 8th grade. Somehow I found his e-mail address about a year ago, and we exchanged a few mails for a while, and i don't remember who broke the conversation. Man, the internet has made keeping connected so much easier. That's one of my three fav. things about it. What an innovation. My three fav. things about it.....1) communication, via e-mail or instant messenging is so much cheaper and easier. How cool is that? 2) Dissemination of info. I don't have to pay for tabs. It's so much easier to teach myself guitar. Before, I'd have to pay a bunch of money to do this, yet, here, it's free. Again, How cool is that. 3) I've got an international voice. You're reading this, even though probably you know me. But, i get to express my feelings, and you read it, even though if you heard me say it, you'd probably roll your eyes. Once again, How cool is that? What's your favorite aspect of the internet? Let me know!!

Sean recommended this guy's story. A former CEO of an internet company that got a job working at a McDonald's in Manhattan. It's an interesting read. My only question is as a "good marketing guy" how can he also call him self "anti-consumerist"? And isn't there a better place for an anti-consumerist to work than mcdonald's and still get in touch with the "real world"? Regardless, thanks sean for an interesting link.

I'm pretty obsessed with "best book" lists, no matter who wrote them. I found this one (via RebeccaBlood) and was surprised by some of the entries, most notably White Noise by Don DeLillo and The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame. I'm glad they're there, don't get me wrong. Just surprised. They also had "The World According to Garp" by John Irving at number 37, which i have not read, but Denise started it, then left it in honduras. I'd like to read it though, and afterwards I may even sit through the movie even though it stars Robin Williams, who i can't stand, but it was early in his career, so it may not be that bad. Anyways, I think I counted 19 books on there that I'd read, which isn't too bad. Any on there that you liked/disliked? What should've been there? What should've been number 1? Personally, I liked "Catcher in the Rye" better than Gatsby, but it was more personal, so that's just me. Tell me what you think, no one's commented on anything in a long time! what gives?

Kick ass. I'm my favorite character from my favorite Kevin Smith movie. I finally got my desired result without trying to skew my answers on purpose. Yay! Take the test and find out which Kevin Smith Male character you are....
You have a genius intellect and an awesome sense of humor. You can sarcastically put someone in their place without batting an eye. Your only problems seem to be that you have trouble acknowledging your true feelings and you may use your humor as a defense to hide what you are really feeling. But, your godliness overpowers any insignificant flaws you may have. Even if you tend to pass gas during very inconvenient moments.

Take The "Which Kevin Smith Male Are You?" Quiz!!

As you can see, I added some more links, something that was long overdue. Here's a quick rundown of what's on there:
Rev. Sean Meade -- Uh, the reverend sean meade's weblog
Punk Planet -- Website of the seminal super-zine that Shawn Kruggel works for. Links to some interviews and articles.
The Progressive -- Website of the Progressive magazine, a publication with an agenda. Can be preachy and/or idealistic, but it's a good read. Plus, you can get about half the stuff from issues on their website for free
Mr. Ridiculous -- Online zine by James Squeaky et al. I usually use it just for record and show reviews and interviews, but there's a ton of columns and misc. stuff on there.
MetaFilter -- Web Community in which people too scared to do it in public get online and argue anonymously. Yes, I do it too.

The rest are pretty self-explanatory, so check 'em out if you get the chance.

Sorry for the lack of posts, but i went to Texas for a bit.

Denise and I saw "The Royal Tenenbaums", which i can't recommend. It's pretty long, and frankly, a little boring. I don't remember when i saw Bottle Rocket, but i remember liking it. And i thought Rushmore was pretty damn funny. But "..tenenbaums" just wasn't that good. Not funny often enough, and many of the scenes drag along. If, despite reading my educated and honest opinion, you decide to go see it anyways, be forewarned. It's very dark comedy, which i normally like, but the emphasis was Not on the comedy in this one.

We also saw "A Beautiful Mind" about John Nash, of the Nash Equilibrium, more on that later. This was by no means a bad movie, but it should have ended about 5 times before it actually did. Denise summed it up well in saying "it was a good movie, but I'll never watch it again". Do yourself a favor and wait until it comes out on video. Russell Crowe's accent is not good though. It seems like he just watched "Forrest Gump" about 6 times before they started shooting. I dunno if i'd recommend it or not, but I wouldn't say "don't see it".

I found this editorial in the paper today by Richard Reeve, entitled "CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM: JOKE OF THE NATION". He raises some good issues and makes some sad but true points. I posted it for the MeFi'ers to dabble with, so we'll see how that goes. There's possibility for more comments later. Enjoi! And by all means, please speak your mind.

In news, founder of Wendy's Dave Thomas died yesterday at age 69 of complications with Liver Cancer. If it were a heart attack or something like that, comments would be easier to make. But, it is newsworthy, no? Trivia note: the first Wendy's was located in Columbus, Ohio.

Also, Michael Jordan's wife has filed for divorce. I think the opening line to the article says it all...."Michael Jordan's wife has filed for divorce after 12 years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences with the basketball superstar who made a comeback this season after a retirement he said was intended to boost time with his family." Hmm, I wonder what she was fed up with? Sucks that three kids have to deal with it, though.

While doing research on the race, I found this quiz from Libertarian candidate Neil Mavis's website. It a little over-simplistic, but it still pegged me quite well as "left-liberal" with a with a score of 90% self-government and 20% economic self-government. It seems like it was set up by libertarians to try to convince people that they were libertarian without knowing it (just look at the web address), so take with a grain of salt. Nevertheless, where do you stand?

I had a great post a couple of days ago about the congressional race, but when i went to publish it, Blogger said it was down for about 40 minutes, and it erased it all. Regardless, John Sullivan won, much to my chagrin. Oh well, life goes on.

Shawn recommended a couple of bands to me. So, I downloaded some stuff. Thursday is a hardcore/emo band. Maybe i'm too picky, i don't know. It's not bad. But, when i hear hardcore, i don't want to be depressed also. And when i want to be depressed, harcore sounds like ass. To me, mixing the genres is like mixing lettuce and ice cream. Just not a good flavor. The lyrics are pretty good, I just don't dig the mixing. But I won't knock it. It's not bad.
I also downloaded some stuff by Dashboard Confessional, which I like quite a bit. Good music to torture yourself with when you're depressed, so I'm really digging it right now. It sounds like things you would love to say to someone, and you know you should, but you can't b/c it hurts too much. Good lord. Can't listen to it for too long, or I'll be worthless for the rest of the day. I really like "Turpentine Chaser" and "Again I Go Unnoticed". Check em out if you get the chance.

The Grammy Award Nominations have been released. Watching the Grammy's is funny, b/c i don't really care about much, if anything, or anyone that's on there. But I like to see people get credit where it's due. India.Arie got seven nominations. Second only to U2, who had a big year even by their standards. Congrats India.
