"There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can't even passively take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all!" - Mario Savio
I really want to piss on the grave of what was the year 2004. I'll burn an effigy and sacrifice a goat to your demise, you heartless, heartless bastard. Ready or not, bring on your little brother, and I'll do the best I can with it. In the meantime - just - pass.
Good riddance. I've plans. I will defeat you, eventually.
Here's to the future. For me, and all of us.
Never. Stop. Fighting.
And sorry, faithful followers. I'll be back to normal soon enough.

Baby, It's Cold Outside
Had I known that driving north for 250 miles would cause the temperature to drop some fifty five degrees, I'd've stayed in Dallas. As it is, I'm just thanking the stars that I came up a day after my parents' respiratory infections were no longer contagious. Now I just have to put up with all the coughing and wheezing. It sounds like TB ward around here but with Coors Light instead of laudanum.
So I've spent the past few days running around south Tulsa. An area that is, from what I can tell, approximately 93% Pro-Bush. And Pro-War. And Pro-Life.
Occasional synaptic misfirings have found me alterately at Borders, GameStop, and Starbucks. Doing my best to be *that guy* in a black shirt, black socks, and black shoes, sneering as Jan Karon books fly off the shelves and Eudora Welty's sit, untouched. I pondered for a bit on what to buy my mom. Went back and forth between books I thought she'd really like if she read them and didn't just stick them on a shelf somewhere. The pragmatist in me settled on some cookbook from one of those TV cooking show hosts (and not Giada De Laurentiis, who I'm head over heels in love with).
So later tonight, we'll open presents, toss the treated and colored dead trees in a plastic bag where it will travel to a dump, decompose in the sun, and slowly poison the quarry. Mom will get her washboard out, dad his djembe, and I my mandolin. We'll sit around the fire singing Leonard Cohen songs until the tumor-laden dog decides he's had enough and stumbles off to bed, hitting the walls that he can no longer see. I'll grab a book and head upstairs to read myself to sleep, and fa. la. la.
Happy Christmas. I love you, baby.

Book meme: Jason over at Finches Wings shares a good Saturday Sunday morning diversion (which he found here): "Take this list of authors, remove those whose efforts do not grace your shelves, and bring the list up to ten by adding some more that do."
Here's Jason's list:
William Shakespeare J.R.R. Tolkien Mark Twain John Le Carre Willa Cather Isaac Bashevis Singer John McPhee Raymond Carver Kathleen Norris Flannery O'Connor
Now, the list reconstituted with authors in the bookcase nearest my desk (those I changed are in bold):
J.R.R. Tolkien Mark Twain Willa Cather Alexander Pushkin Boris Pasternak James Joyce Kurt Vonnegut John Dos Passos Don DeLillo Gunter Grass
To randomize the list, I just started at the to and chose every eight book (unless the author was already on the list, in which case I just went another eight). Anyone want to play along?
It's awfully nice to have friends that just happen to have first-level, Row P seats and a platinum parking pass fall into their laps two hours before the Mavs play the Sonics. It's awfully strange to have to look *up* to see the scoreboard and have a better view of what's going down on the court by actually looking at the court and not the big screen.
That said, I think I'm going to be banned from the AAC for the rest of the season. Mavs are 0-3 in games I've attended this year.

Not to get all seasonal or anything...but
This is a nice little indie-christmas song collection that is being torrented. The Sufjan Stevens songs, especially, are quite nice. Hopefully this will replace my mom's tainted Amy Grant Christmas Album that she plays ceaselessly during the holidays. It's still not as good as the John Denver and the Muppets Christmas Album I had as a kid though. (via crabwalk)

Sacrilicious
London wax museum Madame Tussaud's has a new celebrity nativity scene in which David Beckham and his wife, Posh Spice, play Joseph and Mary. It gets more bizzare. Check a picture over on Londonist.
